How to restore old photos at home: the complete guide
Scan it properly, decide what to repair, and check the result. The practical guide to restoring old and damaged photos without losing what makes them yours.
An old photo rarely goes bad all at once. It fades one summer after another in a frame by the window, it cracks along the fold where someone creased it to fit a wallet, and it picks up those brown blotches that photographic paper develops in damp air.
The good news: almost all of that information is still there. Restoring a photo is not inventing what was lost — it is recovering what the damage is covering up.
First: the scan decides the result
This is the step most people get wrong, and the one that matters most. A restoration starts from the digital copy you hand it, and no AI can recover detail your scan never captured.
- A flatbed scanner beats a phone. Scan at 600 dpi minimum; 1200 dpi if the photo is small (those wallet-sized prints from the 50s and 60s will thank you).
- If a phone is all you have, shoot in indirect daylight, next to a window but out of direct sun. Lay the photo on a flat surface and shoot it straight on, not at an angle.
- Glare is the enemy. Glossy paper throws back the light from your lamp or your own silhouette. Move around until you see no highlight on the screen before you shoot.
- Don't crop the white border when scanning. It helps tell where the photo ends and the damage begins.
A well-scanned, slightly damaged photo gives a better result than an intact photo shot badly.
What can be repaired and what cannot
Realistic expectations save you the disappointment:

That last row matters. When information about a face is missing, any generative tool invents a plausible face instead of recovering the real one. If the result shows you a relative who is "almost" them, that is exactly what happened.
The right order when several things need fixing
If your photo needs more than one thing, do one thing per step and check in between. The order that works best:
- Restore — repair physical damage and bring the tone back.
- Remove noise, if the scan is grainy.
- Increase resolution, only if you are going to print large.
- Colorize, last, and only if you want it.
Doing it all at once in a single instruction gives worse results: each operation competes with the others to interpret the same image.
Always check these three things
Before you call a restoration good, compare it against the original and look at:
- The faces. Are they recognizable? Are the expressions the same? It is the first thing to go and the last thing anyone forgives.
- The text. Dates on the back, signs, archive numbers. Generative models can alter characters while reconstructing, and the change is easy to miss because the result still reads as text.
- Hands and patterns. Fabric prints, railings, brickwork: if something turns irregular or "melted", the model has reinterpreted instead of restored.
Keep the original
Restore a copy and keep the untouched scan. In three years there will be better tools, and you will want to start again from the original file, not from today's restoration.
