Blurry photo: what can be recovered and what cannot

Not all blur is the same. How to tell the three kinds apart, which ones can actually be fixed, and what to expect from a shaky photo before you try to save it.

"Remove the blur" sounds like a single operation, but there are at least three different problems behind a blurry photo, and they do not recover the same way. Knowing which one you have saves time and heads off expectations no tool can meet.

The three kinds of blur

1. Motion blur. The camera or the subject moved during the exposure. You recognize it because the smear has a direction: lights stretch into lines, not circles. It is the most common kind in indoor photos and photos of children.

2. Out of focus. The focus landed on a different plane. The blur is even and rounded, with no direction, and it usually affects only part of the scene while another part is sharp.

3. Not enough resolution. The photo is not blurry: it is small and you are viewing it large. Edges look stair-stepped or mushy when you zoom in. This is not fixed by sharpening but by increasing the resolution.

A quick test: zoom to 100%. If you see square pixels, it is resolution. If you see soft smears with a direction, it is motion. If they are soft smears with no direction, it is focus.

What AI can actually do

An enhancement tool rebuilds edges and textures from what is still left in the image. The more information survives, the better the result.

The pattern: AI fills in what is missing with the most likely thing. When a lot of information survives, "most likely" matches reality and the result is excellent. When little survives, "most likely" is a believable invention.

If the photo has text, compare it

If the image contains a sign, a license plate, a document or a screenshot, check the result character by character. When reconstructing badly degraded text, any model can produce letters and numbers that are legible but different from the originals: an "8" that turns into a "3" reads just as well and nobody notices. For data that matters, always compare against your original.

How to get more out of it

  • Start from the largest file you have. Not the copy forwarded over WhatsApp: that one already lost half the information.
  • One operation at a time. First remove the blur, and only then upscale or denoise if you still need to.
  • If the original is dark and blurry, try removing noise too: in night photos, much of what feels like blur is really grain.
  • Always compare at 100%, not as a thumbnail. Almost everything looks fine when it is small.

When to accept there is no fix

If you cannot tell what color someone's shirt is in the original, neither can the tool. It can hand you a shirt in a plausible color, and at that point you are no longer restoring a memory: you are generating a new one. For a family photo, that is rarely what you want.
